The Ahmedabad Railway Division is all set to cash in on waste. From next week, a private firm will collect trash from pantries of 15 trains passing through Ahmedabad paying railway Rs 47,000 per month.
The rail authorities decided to involve a recycling firm in collecting garbage from the pantry cars with twin objectives. First, to keep trains and the station premises spic and span. Second, to increase railway’s revenue.
The private firm will recycle the collected waste, including plastic water bottles. Food items will not be reused, though.
Confirming the development, senior DCM Udayshankar Jha said: “We have chalked out a plan on how to deal with the waste of pantry cars. A company has approached us with a proposal of paying us Rs 47,000 a month in lieu of collecting waste from the pantries of 15 trains. It will recycle them. We will, however, ensure that food items are not re-used.”
Jha added, “We are also working on how to make the most out of waste dumped in other places on the railway premises.”
At present, more than 112 trains pass through Ahmedabad everyday, leading to accumulation of huge garbage in and around the station. The railway authorities are chalking out a plan to involve another recycling firm to collect them. The move will help railway earn revenue besides saving the huge amount it pays to the civic body at present for disposing the garbage.
