Be wary of spitting anywhere on the premises of Ahmedabad railway station. If you are caught not only will you have to pay the usual fine of up to Rs 500, but also reform five other offenders before you will be let go.
The Ahmedabad division of Western Railway is launching a campaign on Wednesday against spitting. You will be charged under Section 145 of the Railway Act, if found spitting on the premises. A team headed by a railway judge will decide on the punishment to be meted out. Those trying to argue much may be slapped with more severe punishment if it is established that they committed the offence.
The railways have decided to go on the offensive against spitting as it has become a major headache for them. Spittle not only make the environment unhygienic but also damage the body of the coaches as paan and gutkha spit contains acid, said Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uday Shankar Jha.
Cleaning paan and gutkha marks costs the railways crores of rupees every year, the official said. Fed up of whitewashing the walls at the platforms and other places, the officials resorted to covering the walls with stone slabs as cleaning them is easier.
Currently, the railways register about 250 cases of littering on their premises every month.
