No more smelly bed sheets

Railways to introduce disposable bed sheets and pillow covers made of polypropylene non-woven fabric in air-conditioned coaches, after frequent complaints from passengers about dirty, unwashed linen
YOGESH AVASTHI
No more worries about smelly bed sheets and musty blankets. Heeding the frequent complaints by passengers about the cleanliness of bed sheets, blankets and pillows provided in air-conditioned rail coaches, the Railways have decided to introduce disposable linen.
The disposable bed sheets, pillow covers and blanket made of polypropylene non-woven fabric will be given to passengers in first class, second and three-tier AC. Passengers are often dissatisfied with the cleanliness standards of the linen offered by the railways, as it is used by multiple passengers and often not washed properly. A Lok Shakti Mail passenger, Sunil Wadhwani, said, I received dirty bed sheets with someones hair stuck on them. Even after complaining, I did not receive clean, washed linen, as even the replacement was dirty.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Ahmedabad, Uday Shankar Jha, said, Passengers often complain that the linen is not clean. Introducing a disposable, ecofriendly kit will ensure hygiene and eliminate the risk of passengers catching allergies. The kit will either be disposed of or returned to manufacturing company, Reliance Industries , for recycling.
National institute of Design students had also given a Rs 12-lakh proposal to design the linen, but it was rejected due to the steep cost. We are going to give this kit to passengers of Ahmedabad-Mumbai Lokshakti Express for the first time, on a trial basis from Saturday. Feedback forms will be given to passengers to assess their reactions and opinions on the change. If the feedback is positive , we will introduce this eco-friendly and recyclable kit in other trains, he added.
Around 10 days back, Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud, senior DCM Jha and other railway officers did a surprise check on the contractor who is in charge of the cleaning of railway linen. The visit turned out to be an eye-opener . There was no one to supervise the cleaning, the floors were dirty and no effort was being made to clean the stained sheets properly, sources said. The officers warned the contractor that his contract would be cancelled if he didnt get his act together.
