Showing zero tolerance towards ragging on its campus, the anti-ragging committee of the National Institute of Design (NID) Gandhinagar suspended a second-year student, identified as Ashish Kumar, following a written complaint from a girl studying in the first year.
Kumar was handed his suspension order on June 19. Kumar, learning toy designing at the NID, was also accused of 4 making lewd remarks while ragging his victim, also a toy-designing student. The incident happened on June 13. The girl was urged by her friends to lodge a complaint.
The next day, on June 14, the victim met the anti-ragging committee members. She was advised to submit a written complaint. After receiving the complaint, Kumar and his victim were called by the committee, which found Kumar’s explanation unsatisfactory. The committee deliberated over the incident for a few days before finally suspending Kumar.
The NID confirmed the news. Akhil Sahai, campus in-charge, NID Gandhinagar, told Ahmedabad Mirror, “Yes, we have suspended a student for ragging.” When asked if the suspended student’s name was Ashish Kumar, he said, “Let’s not take any names. We have suspended the culprit.”
Investigation is still on. Currently, Kumar has been suspended indefinitely. The NID top brass will meet soon to decide whether Kumar should be expelled from the institute. The NID has to be applauded for the stance it has adopted while dealing with the ragging menace.
