Placements may soon cease to be the exclusive preserve of MBA, engineering and MCA institutes.
In what could be a master stroke in student-industry interface leading to jobs straight out of college for graduates, the higher education department has made it mandatory for all 900-plus colleges in the state to set up their own placement cells for passouts. The move will be a godsend for arts, science and commerce graduates who hitherto could not expect a job with a solitary degree in hand.
The new project called UDISHA — for Universal Development of Integrated Employability Skills Through Higher Education Agencies — is the brainchild of higher education commissioner Jayanti Ravi.
Explaining how UDISHA will work, committee member SN Iyer said each college will set up an eight-member placement cell consisting of the principal, a lecturer and two students each from FY, SY and TY, which will interact with fellow students and list the observations.

APTITUDE TEST BY BM INSTITUTE
At the end of the third year, each passout will be asked to indicate if he/she would like to continue with study, go in for self-employment or like help of the placement cell. Those opting for placement will be put through an aptitude test conducted by BM Institute, which will assess their skills, liking and potential to suggest disciplines in which they could try for jobs.
Sources said 80 per cent of the students opt for jobs after graduation, or at least a part-time job to go with higher studies. Placement facility will also be open to arts, commerce, science post-graduation students.
JOB FAIRS IN RAJKOT, SURAT IN AUGUST
After the college-level exercise, data of all students will be sent to a state-wide co-ordination committee, which will sort the candidates on basis of preferences, talent and aptitude. Gujarat College in-charge principal Mahendra Bhatt has been made the nodal officer of the co-ordination panel. The panel will arrange job fairs and approach corporates, banks, insurance agencies etc. for participation. Small and medium scale industries promoted by GIDC, BPOs and retail chains are also being familiarised with the new scheme. To begin with, fairs will be held in Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat in August.
The education department will help all colleges with a Rs 5,000 fund to run the placements cells. Lecturers in the cell will be trained in interviewing candidates, instilling confidence in them and run the scheme effectively. The department is ready with a publicity plan consisting of scheme literature, posters and radio advertisements.
