The CBI has asked DIG-cum-chief security commissioner (RPF) to arrest Assistant Security Commissioner (Ahmedabad) Atar Singh and Inspector Pankaj Dhakad on charges of violation of human rights and corruption.
But considering Singh’s high rank, the DIG has raised certain queries before giving go-ahead to Singh’s arrest. Earlier too, Singh had landed in CBI net. The RPF has to report to CBI about its course of action by the next week.
Three RPF personnel, including assistant security commissioner Atar Singh, inspectors S K Sharma and Pankaj Dhakad, nabbed a youth of Malia last December falsely implicating him in a theft case that took place near Dhrangadhra station. They detained the innocent youth, Mehboob, for three days and demanded Rs 20,000 from his uncle, Dosh Mohammed, to set him free. Finally, the deal was sealed for Rs 17,000.
On December 6, 2008, Dosh tipped the CBI about the incident. The next day, a central agency team arrested RPF constable Varun Malik while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 17,000 from Mehboob’s uncle. During interrogation, Malik told CBI that he took the money on behalf of RPF inspector Sharma.
The CBI then raided the RPF post at Dhrangadhra and saw Mehboob cuffed. Sources in the CBI said its officials subsequently lodged corruption case against the RPF personnel and submitted a report on the unlawful detention of the youth to Gujarat State Human Rights Commission.
