For a change, parents more than kids were panting a day before schools reopen on Monday. While some had to scamper to school-designated outlets for new uniforms, others were grappling with having to adjust with a change in both the uniform and the syllabus.
Parents of students of Airport School in Sardarnagar complained that the school was changing syllabus/books and uniforms very frequently. A complaint against the institution was also lodged with the District Education Officer of Ahmedabad and Commissioner of Education, Gandhinagar, they claimed.
Asia School in Drive-in area, parents protested against the poor quality of uniforms being sold by the dealer recommended by the school. Some said they had paid money in advance to Dhwani Enterprises, the agency appointed by the school to supply the “new” uniforms, but the clothes they got were sub-standard quality. Besides, there was an inordinate delay in delivery, they further alleged.
The aggrieved parents of Airport School alleged that the school authorities were insisting that they buy new school uniforms and notebooks from a particular shop. The complaint in this regard was lodged in the last week of May, they said. “The institution’s authorities are insisting that we should buy uniforms from a particular shop in Sardarnagar. This is plain harassment and waste of money,” said a parent.Airport School secretary S Sarkar, however, claimed this was for the first time since 1977 that they changed the school uniform.
Parents of Asia School alleged that the institute had changed the uniform to make money. They too complained that they are being compelled to buy new uniforms from the school-appointed outlet, which did not have adequate stock. “The school had displayed a sample of pure cotton uniform, but the material used in the uniforms is very different and not at all suited to the city’s weather. Children will sweat profusely wearing this material in the oppressive heat of the city,” said Shaji Warrior, a parent, whose son and daughter study in the school. When approached, Dhwani Enterprises owner Bhavesh Shah told Ahmedabad Mirror that the material was chosen by the school and he was only responsible for stitching the uniforms.
About the delay, he said it was caused as measurements were not taken in advance, and there is no standard fit. John G Verghese, managing trustee of Asia School, said, “This is a public charitable school. We do not run it to make money. The contract for uniforms has been given to Arvind Mills. It will soon open two-three more outlets to speed up delivery. We have anyway relaxed the uniform norm till June 30.”
