Come June, visiting railway reservation centres would not be mandatory for booking train tickets. Amdavadis will have the option of buying them from a post office in the city from next month.
The city’s maiden railway reservation centre at post office would be inaugurated at Ambawadi Post Office in Manikbag Society in the first week of June. The innovative service is ready for a smooth take-off next month with required infrastructure already in place. The postal department will charge Rs 15 for each sleeper class ticket, Rs 20 for each AC two-tier or AC three-tier ticket and Rs 25 for each AC first class ticket in lieu of offering the service of its employees. The cancellation charges will be Rs 10.
Sources in Indian Railways said computers with PRS link had been installed at the post office and tickets’ paper rolls had been dispatched. Two postal department employees have been trained to issue rail tickets, too. The sources also said that Ahmedabad Railway Division has recently sent a letter to the postal department enquiring about when the service would be launched.
Udayshankar Jha, the senior divisional commercial manager of Ahmedabad rail division, said: “Several railway passengers still do not have access to computers. They have to spend several hours in queues for purchasing tickets.
The new initiative will help them book tickets easily.”Jha added, “The railway is through with developing the infrastructure for starting the service from Ambawadi Post Office. The facility will be extended to Sanand and Sidhpur post offices soon.”
India’s first railway reservation centre at post office was inaugurated at Ahwa Post Office in Dang district of Gujarat in 2007 following a Memorandum of Understating between the railway ministry and department of post in New Delhi on July 31, 2007. As per the deal, the building for housing PRS is provided by the department of post free of cost. The postal department also provides its employees for operating PRS terminals at post offices. The rent for PRS channel, hardware and communication equipment is borne by Indian Railways.
