There’s nothing Nano about this decision. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation working on the Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor has increased its budget from Rs 150 crore to Rs 300 crore for its project in Gujarat. The freight corridor touches the Tata nano project location in Sanand. The decision was taken after DFCC officials realised they will receive heavy traffic in this area.
“SMART CITY-Integrated Townships are coming up at Godhavi and Garodia villages in Sanand. Sanand is also set to become a hub for container movement. Goods meant for the Nano plant and its ancillary industries will land here, so this line will see good business. The railways earns much more by transporting goods than from ferrying passengers,” said a DFCC official.
The Corporation expanded its plan after receiving support from the state government. “Increased connectivity means goods will be available without hassles. This will encourage people to set up more industries. The enthusiasm shown by the state government made us revise the plan and double the budget,” he said.
Railway flyovers
The DFCC has chosen Sanand, Mehsana, Palanpur and Makarpura as junctions where trains can shift from Indian Railways’ tracks to those owned by DFCC. The Corporation also plans to build double-track flyovers at these spots. The official said, “We are conducting a feasibility survey. By March 2010, we will acquire the land needed for the project.
Throughout Gujarat We plan to lay railway tracks covering 560 km. We will also build 468 small and big bridges. “In Rajasthan, we built tracks adjacent to those laid by the Indian Railways as there are fewer settlements there. But in Gujarat, we will be forced to create new routes due to lack of space. For this, we also plan to build bypasses at Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Mehsana and Kalol. This is a reason why we have increased the budget.” The project will be ready by 2016.
