Interested in computer engineering but got admission in civil engineering ? Cheer up. Gujarat Technological University (GTU) plans to introduce dual-degree system for engineering courses from new academic year. As per the new policy, a student can also acquire a minor degree along with his major subject, by opting for the specialisation of his choice in the third semester.
For example, if a civil engineering student is interested in computer engineering, he can also have, along with the major subject, a minor degree in computer engineering by clearing six papers at the end of the four-year term. The minor-degree subject can be chosen in the third semester (second year) of engineering.
“This system is being introduced for the first time in Gujarat. Beginning third semester, the students can clear one paper each of the minor subject in every semester. At the end of the course, they get one major degree and one minor. It is purely optional,” said a source in GTU adding, “By June, we shall make an official announcement.”So, while Monday to Friday, one can attend lectures of the major subject, on the weekend they can attend theory and practical classes of the minor subject. “We are hopeful it will better students’ job prospects,” the source said.
