The search committee for the vice chancellor of Gujarat University has a problem of plenty. The panel has with it a former vice chancellor, college principals and IIM dons to choose from the successor of Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi.
Trivedi himself is one of the probables as he is eligible for a second three-year term. His first term, a chequered one, term gets over on June 26.According to a source in the university, the three members search committee of former Union minister Y K Alagh, —Gitesh Shah and Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Vice Chancellor B A Prajapati has as many as 16 names, some of them from outside the state, before them. The committee will meet on May 16 to finalise three names which will be forwarded to Governor Naval Kishore Sharma.
The governor, by virtue of being the chancellor of the university, will appoint one of these three as the 15th vice chancellor of the largest university of the state. “We are looking for the person most suited for the top job at the university which has about 25,000-strong staff and close to 2.45 lakh students,” Alagh told Mirror. “The university’s assets are worth Rs 5000 crore. We are looking for the person who can best utilise these assets and for this we are looking within the state and outside, too,” he said. In the last couple of instances, pro-vice chancellors held the charge of the office after the end of the term of vice chancellors.
The pro-vice chancellors, with a few exceptions, were promoted to the job. Trivedi got the top job by this route. However, the office of the pro-vice chancellor is currently vacant as NK Patel quit in disgust after a prolonged stand-off with Trivedi over various issues.
According to the source, the search committee has received the names of Prof Ravindra Dholakia and Prof GS Gupta from IIM-Ahmedabad, former Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University vice chancellor Balwant Jani, a physics and a chemistry professor from SP University (Vallabh Vidyanagar), HK College Principal Subhash Brahmbhatt, JG College Principal Saurabh Choksi, Rashtrabhasha College Principal Ujjam Singh, BN Suhagya of LM College of Pharmacy, LD College of Arts Principal Mahipatsinh Chavda, MG Science professor Shivranjan Singh Jadav, three professors from New Delhi, and a few more.
