In times of economic slowdown, when well-paying jobs are hard to get,the closure of BEd colleges has further whittled down the number of job opportunities available to Master of Education (MEd) students. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has cancelled the accreditation of 70 BEd colleges across the state due to inadequate staff and facilities offered by the institutions. Of the 70 colleges, 20 are affiliated to Gujarat University. This move will not only affect the more than 400 teachers who are suddenly out of jobs, but also around 300 MEd students who were employed by these colleges.
Due to the mushrooming of BEd colleges in the state, MEd students were in high demand for teaching posts. Even before the completion of their final exams, BEd institutes would seek a list of MEd students from their respective colleges to scout for potential recruits. In fact, this was one of the reasons why Gujarat University declared MEd results within 10 days of the exam.
In stark contrast this year, students are still apprehensively looking for jobs, after their exam ended on April 15. Their anxiety is justified, as now the students will be competing with around 400 experienced teachers for limited posts.Gujarat University Department of Education Dean R S Patel said, “Placement of MEd is going to be tough this year, with so many experienced teachers vying for the same jobs. I would advise students to also consider alternative employment options to BEd colleges such as Primary Teacher’s Certificate (PTC) colleges .”
