Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board is considering introduction of ATKT (Allowed to Keep the Term) in two subjects for class X exams. While a decision on the matter is awaited, sources said that if given a nod by the members, the new policy will be implemented in 2010. So far ATKT facility is given only to college students.

On an average, nearly 1.25 lakh children fail in class X exams every year. In a meeting held on Friday, the board members were of the opinion that ATKT facility in two subjects will be in the interest of such students as they will not lose a year and can clear the ATKT papers before class XII results. At present, the board conducts re-exams a couple of months after the March exam. However, it is only conducted for those who have failed in one subject.

Board members said that if re-exams are held for two subjects, it will benefit a large number of students.“The policy is still being discussed. The board doesn’t want to take a decision in a hurry like they did for open-book exam policy, which was withdrawn as soon as it was announced,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary and Chairman of GSHSEB Hasmukh Adiya, held meetings with District Education Officers and Examination Committee to chalk out stringent measures to check malpractice during exams this year. While he was of the opinion that there has been a sharp decline in copying cases in the last couple of years, other members argued that there were lot of cases that were going unregistered.

This year, the board exams for both Class X and Class XII are scheduled to be held on March 17. As many as 7.76 class X exams, 90, 955 for class XII science and 3.63 lakh students for General Stream exams.
