The vice-chancellor of the Gujarat University (GU), Parimal Trivedi, on Tuesday announced setting up of a design institute on the varsity campus. Trivedi said that the institute, called Institute of Design Expression Art & Learning (IDEAL), would be first in the country to offer a wide range of courses on designing.
Trivedi also said that the institute would start admitting its “first batch of students from April”. Trivedi’s announcement has sparked off a controversy because the institute apparently is not a brainchild of the university. IDEAL, in fact, is a private initiative, with a functional centre in Memnagar, Gurukul.
Contrary to Trivedi’s claim of starting a new institute, IDEAL’s Memnagar centre has been operational since 2003. Sources familiar with the development claim Trivedi is trying accommodate a private institute on the varsity campus by labelling it as a brainchild of GU.
“The announcement of setting up of the institute is an eyewash,” a varsity official said. “The truth is that Trivedi is allowing a private institute to set up a campus on the varsity premises.”
Trivedi, however, maintained that IDEAL was not associated with any private organisation. He said that IDEAL would be on par with NID.
When AM contacted an official of IDEAL’s centre in Memnagar, Asha Mandapa, she said that the institute would be moving to the Gujarat University.
