Yes, you read it right. Modi sanctions AES proposal for a new university; campus to come up near Helmet Circle; admission to begin in June this year

Chief Minister Narendra Modi has officially sanctioned the proposal by Ahmedabad Education Society to set up the Rs 350-crore private Ahmedabad University, taking away top AES colleges like H L Institute of Commerce, M G Science College, L M College of Pharmacy and LD Arts College from Gujarat University. Apart from Gujarat Law Society-run H A College of Commerce and its law college, GU will be left with second-rung colleges in the city and institutes in rural areas.
The two other proposals that have been sanctioned are those of ICFAI University in Ahmedabad and Navrachna University in Vadodara. The Ahmedabad university campus will come up at the AES land near Helmet Circle which is popularly known as Gujarat University ground. The other colleges AES runs include H K Primary Training College, A G Teachers College, H L Institute of Computer Application, B K Majmudar Institute of Business Administration, AES Institute of Computer Training and AES Post Graduate Institute of Business Management. More than 15,000 students are presently studying in AES-run colleges.
Says AES Director Surendra Shah, “The academic operations will begin in June this year. This year onwards all self-financed Bcom, BBA, BCA, MBA, MCA institutes will be affiliated to AU. Students who will enrol in the first year will now have to apply to Ahmedabad University for enrolment.
Within the next five years, all the institutes under AES banner will be fully affiliated to the university. We are planning to revise the syllabus of these courses and introduce a grading system. Gradually, more professional courses will be introduced. Very soon, we shall be announcing our vice chancellor.”
According to sources, AES had already appointed an international advisor to scout for strategic collaborations with foreign institutions from US and Europe. AES also promises corporatisation of education and with the likes of textile tycoon Shrenik Kasturbhai as its chairman, the group’s ambitious project will not be lacking in power.
The governing body includes Arvind Mills managing director Sanjay Lalbhai, chairman and managing director of Torrent Sudhir Mehta and member of IIM-A’s governing council Praful Anubhai.Rubbishing talks of competition, Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said, “It is a very good move by the state government, specially at a time when there is lot of demand for professional courses. Students will now have more opportunities. I don’t see it as a disadvantage for Gujarat University.”
