91 college students stand to lose a year

Ninety-one college students who failed to attend class regularly will not to able to sit for their university examinations. Colleges, as per procedure, send forms of its students to the Gujarat University at the start of second term.
Just a week before the final exams, the colleges write to the university to withdraw the forms of those students who have failed to fulfil the mandatory attendance. As per the Gujarat University Ordinance numbers 78 and 83 A, a term is not granted to a student who fails to attend the required number of classes. As per norms, undergraduates are required to have 75 per cent of attendance, while post-grads need to have 66.5 per cent attendance by the end of the academic year.
L D Arts Principal Mahipatsinh Chavda said, “Whenever a student takes admission in our college, we make it clear to the parents and the student that attendance is mandatory. We also take it in writing from the student that he/she will attend college regularly.”Of the 91 students who won’t be allowed to sit in their final exams, 43 are from second year BA, of which 7 are from L D Arts, 13 from H K Arts, 11 from St Xavier’s and 12 from S R Mehta college.Four students of S Y B Sc from St Xavier’s have been disallowed from sitting in the university exams, while 44 S Y B Com students have been stopped from sitting in the exams. H L Commerce accounts for 3 students, while 13 are from M C Shah College, 10 from H K Arts & Commerce, 8 from C C Sheth and Narayan Guru each, while C U Shah and J G College accounted for one student each.
