Upasana Thakore, a class VII student of Mount Carmel School, Navrangpura, who was suspended following a fracas over the school’s refusal to give her a re-test after she skipped her second mid-term exam to take part in the girls’ under-14 national basketball event, may just have been a victim of misunderstanding.
The school authorities suspended her for talking to the media about her problem. In a letter, dated January 27, Mount Carmel authorities informed Upasana, 13, that she has been suspended for giving an interview against the school to the media. The letter further advised Upasana and her parents that they should have had a dialogue with the school authorities to sort out the student’s grievances.
However, Upasana’s parents insist they never approached the media, and tried everything within their powers to have a word with the school management. ‘Not our fault’Clarifying her stand, Upasana’s mother, Nirmala Thakore, told Ahmedabad Mirror, “We never approached the media. We wrote to the District Education Officer (DEO) to help us, and also the police. Maybe, the media picked up the news from there and contacted us.” When asked why they did not contact the school authorities, Thakore said she went to meet the school principal, Sister Prescilla Lobo, on January 3 but was unable to meet her.
She again went to the school on January 5, Thakore claimed, and met Sister Humbline. She also met the principal, Sister Priscilla Lobo.“On January 6, we submitted a written request to the school management for a re-test,” Thakore claimed. However, Mount Carmel School constitution doesn’t allow re-tests.Thakore is hoping for an amicable solution. “Who would want to jeopardise their child’s education? We just hope that this matter comes to an end, and our child gets justice. I am sure the Carmel management will also take into consideration the fact that Upasana has been studying there right from Nursery level.”
