specially flown to election venues is a privilege not just of the Members of Parliament. A Law student from Amdavad on Saturday evening experienced the thrills and benefits normally reserved for MPs when governments face a no-confidence motion!Ahead of Gujarat University’s student senate elections on Sunday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) decided to fly one of its voters, Manhar Chaudhary, from Delhi to Ahmedabad on Saturday evening.

After casting his vote, Chaudhary, a student of Motilal Nehru Law College, Lal Darwaja, will fly back to Delhi, where he is currently training for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exams. When AM contacted Chaudhary, he was reluctant to reveal details about his journey. However, AM has learnt that he travelled on an Air India flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad, at the cost of Rs 3,175 and landed in the city around 7.25 pm. Chaudhary, “I was hoping to take part in the voting process of GU student senate polls on Sunday. However, I am in a middle of a very demanding schedule in Delhi. But the ABVP came to my help and here I am, in Ahmedabad for a day.”

He refused to specify on the nature of ‘help’ extended to him.The ABVP candidates have dominated their rivals from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) for the past few years in the GU senate elections. This time around, they have lost a sizeable chunk of their voters due to three Law colleges’ failure to submit their voters’ lists on time. Students of L A Shah Law College, I M Nanavati Law College, Manek Nanavati Law College are not eligible to vote on Sunday.

Since these colleges are considered the ABVP vote banks, the party’s candidates are on the edge.Said J J Patel, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader and the ABVP advisor, “There are 46 candidates for eight posts. The total number of voters in the Law studies department has come down to 72 from 140 because students from three colleges are not allowed to vote. Which means every vote is crucial for us.”When asked about Chaudhary being flown from Delhi, Patel said, “That boy had a busy schedule and we needed his vote at any cost. We did whatever we could to get him in the city.”
