Now, that’s what we call a quick response. On Tuesday, the discarded plaques bearing Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi’s name were back on the very buildings from which they were removed on V-C’s orders, just a day after Chief Minister Narendra Modi snubbed the varsity’s February 12 function.Ahmedabad Mirror had reported how Dr Trivedi tried to get Modi to ‘inaugurate’ a few buildings on GU campus, including those which the V-C himself had inaugurated, during a gala event planned for February 12 (Don’t waste your time, Modiji, January 31).
To ensure that the chief minister doesn’t get a wind of the fact that some of the buildings were already inaugurated, Dr Trivedi got the plaques bearing his name and inauguration details removed. Ahmedabad Mirror on January 31 had published pictures of the discarded plaques. Probably, the chief minister saw through Dr Trivedi’s design and on February 9, his office informed the GU top brass that Modi was too busy on February 12 and would not be able to inaugurate the buildings (Modi drops varsity event, AM, February 10). Following the communication, varsity decided to put on hold its February 12 function.
When Dr Trivedi, who in the past has made several efforts to gratify Modi, realised the function had fallen through, he instructed that the displaced plaques bearing his name and inauguration details be re-fitted. And abracadabra... within hours, the plaques were back. When Ahmedabad Mirror contacted Dr Trivedi, he, as is his wont, played down the entire incident.
He said, “There was some misunderstanding in the first place. The chief minister was not supposed to inaugurate the buildings that were already declared open. He was supposed to inaugurate new sections within those buildings. And regarding the so-called discarded plaques, well, they were never discarded. They were removed because there were some additions to be done.”Dr Trivedi also claimed that he didn’t instruct any college not to hold its internal exams on February 12. Said Dr Trivedi, “There were no such orders issued by me. I had merely requested colleges to see what can be done to ensure maximum participation.”Most colleges had announced there would be no exams on February 12. Now, after the function’s cancellation, most colleges have rescheduled their exams on February 12, confusing students further.

V-C allows free usage of GU property
There are murmurs of protest in corridors of Gujarat University over Vice-Chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi’s decision to allow the usage of varsity property for a political event, completely free of cost. On February 11, the Shaher Yuva Morcha, affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party, will organise a function to commemorate the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Nirmaan Divas. Present at the function, which will be held on a plot near Dada Saheb Na Pagla near CEPT University, will be Chief Minister Narendra Modi himself. The varsity normally charges Rs 40,000 per day for the usage of this property. But for this function, the varsity is not charging Shaher Yuva Morcha. This has raised the heckles of quite a few senior GU officials. When contacted, Dr Trivedi refused to comment on the issue.
