Inevitably, Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi finds himself in the news. This time around, he is all set to get the unsuspecting chief Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurate around seven buildings on the university campus, of which three were inaugurated by Dr Trivedi himself on October 31, 2007 !

Dr Trivedi will spearhead a gala function on February 12, where Modi is scheduled to inaugurate buildings housing Gujarat University’s

Convention Centre, Information Centre, Department of Defence Studies and Professional Courses, Home Science Department, Human Genetic Centre, Educational Media and Research Centre and Geo-informatic Climate Change Management Centre.

Out of these, Dr Trivedi has already inaugurated Department of Defence Studies and Professional Courses, Home Science Department and Educational Media and Research Centre.

And to ensure that the chief minister doesn’t get a wind of his plans, about ten days ago, Dr Trivedi secretly got the plaques bearing his name and the function details removed from the buildings he had inaugurated.

Unfortunately for Dr Trivedi, Ahmedabad Mirror managed to locate the plaques bearing Dr Trivedi’s name and details of the October 31 inauguration details. These plaques were dumped in an isolated location inside the University campus.

And if this was not enough, the vice-chancellor has instructed all Gujarat University-affiliated colleges and institutes to reschedule their February 12 preliminary exams to ensure sizeable attendance during the buildings’ inauguration function. Most colleges will be conducting their preliminary exams from February 3 to 20.
While it is no secret that Dr Trivedi doesn’t let go of any opportunity to gratify the chief minister, his forthcoming venture really transcends all forms of reverence. When Ahmedabad Mirror asked Dr Trivedi the reason behind re-inauguration of the buildings he had already declared open, the vice-chancellor said, “I had not inaugurated the buildings as such.

It was just a soft inauguration needed to get the UGC grant. The real inauguration will be be held on February 12, and Modiji has given his consent to do the needful.”About the dumped plaques bearing his name, Dr Trivedi said, “Those were temporary plaques. So what if we got them removed? And who said we removed them secretly ? Everyone knows what is going on.

There is complete transparency in our dealing.”Talking about no-exams day on February 12, Dr Trivedi said, “The University is organising such a grand event, and it will benefit students if they can share the chief minister’s vision.”The vice-chancellor further said that planning was still on for the February 12 function. “We have not finalised which buildings CM Modi will inaugurate. Once we draw up a plan, we will let the media know about the details.”
