The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and its bitter rival, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), have fulfilled their promise of cleaning up the Gujarat University walls that were defaced during senate election campaigning. On February 3, Ahmedabad Mirror had reported that leaders of NSUI and ABVP had pledged to keep the university campus clean (Clean politics). On February 3, more than 70 members of NSUI and ABVP had gathered at the university to wash away poll grafitti.
They had also removed posters of their candidates from the walls.Just three days later, the university walls are sparkling. Fresh coats of whitewash have been applied to the walls, while the floor has been scrubbed clean. Students worked tirelessly to achieve their goal, and the results have been more than satisfactory. The university walls, which had turned into an eyesore due to election posters and graffiti, now look like recently-constructed structures. And students are determined to keep it that way. Said Vijay Tomar, president, NSUI (Ahmedabad), “It is our duty to ensure the university remains clean. When we began cleaning the university walls, we realised how difficult it must be for the varsity officials to undo the damage.”

He said students will ensure not just the university, but even other colleges will never be defaced... election or no election. Said Tomar, “We will ensure that educational institutes’ walls remain untouched throughout the year.”The ABVP leadership was only too happy to support their rivals in the cleanliness cause. Said Chirag Patel, state secretary, ABVP, “We are all for a clean campus. We will make sure our candidates don’t deface the campus.

We will also work throughout the year towards making the campus clean.”Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi was a happy man on Thursday. “I must congratulate, and thank, both ABVP and NSUI for the wonderful work they have done on university campus. I have always stressed on a clean, environment-friendly campus and today, these students have proved we all are going in the right direction.”
