The resident doctors of the state medical colleges reiterated their demand for better compensation even as a section of them in Jamnagar, Rajkot and Surat observed a token strike on Friday in support of their plea.Citing example of the resident doctors’ pay package in other states, the medicos of Guajarat claimed that they were being given a raw deal.
“We are on duty for 24 hours, but what we get against that is peanuts,” said a resident doctor in the state capital. There are around 2,000 resident doctors in the state. Of them, 1,100 are at service round the clock in Ahmedabad. At the time of joining, they get Rs 9,600 as stipend. In the second year, they get additional Rs 500, said a resident medico of Civil Hospital.
The resident doctors of BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, claimed that the inflow of patients has increased with time, Gujarat has developed over the years, but their stipend hardly improved. A resident medico of the city said: “The expenses have increased manifold. It is very difficult to meet both ends with a paltry stipend of around Rs 10,000 per month.
A super specialist here gets Rs 12,000 a month as stipend, while a doctor in same capacity at AIMS gets Rs 55,000. How long can we inspire ourselves for dedicated service with this amount?” While the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations are being implemented by the state government, the resident medicos should also get a better deal, said the doctors, also unhappy over the stipend revision procedure.
The enhanced stipend announced in 2006 came into effect in 2008 only, said a medico.Though aggrieved, the resident doctors of Ahmedabad are against going on strike because that would only land patients in a spot of bother. “The state government should realise our plight and do the needful,” said one of them.Health Minister Jai Narayan Vyas, busy in a meeting, was not available for comments.
