SET TO GET A FACELIFT: Sabarmati railway stationWith the proposal of its upgradation being shot down in three successive railway budgets, it is becoming obvious that the Sabarmati railway station may not be given the central terminus status. Given the situation, the Ahmedabad railway division has decided to refurbish the station if not have it as a terminus. The Ahmedabad railway division DRM Rajiv Mishra, using his own discretion, has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for improving facilities and adding new ones at the Sabarmati railway station.
The Ahmedabad division had since long wanted to replace Kalupur station with the Sabarmati station as the terminus for the city with a view to make it easily accessible for citizens living in the western part of the city. The railway board had rejected the proposal thrice in the past saying the cost involved, Rs 30 crore, was too high for a project involving a single station.Having resigned to the situation, the Ahmedabad railway division has decided to give a face-lift to the Dharamnagar side of the Sabarmati station. As part of the plan, work is currently on to improve the facade of the premises, pave the ground with concrete and improve the lighting arrangement.
Facilities inside the station premises will include new ladies’ waiting room, gents room and a VIP room. Besides, a public address system and CCTV cameras will be installed at the station, while the flooring will be done with granite and portraits of Mahatma Gandhi hung for an improved look.Soon, permission will also be sought for trains passing through Sabarmati to halt at the station.
Trains travelling towards north India, numbering more than 20, pass through Sabarmati station. The new stoppage will allow citizens travelling to places like Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab to board trains from Sabarmati instead of Kalupur. The upgraded Sabarmati station is scheduled to be inaugurated by MoS railways Naran Rathwa on January 31.
