Blackboards, benches were set up in the skating rink to accommodate primary students Tuesday brought good news for primary students of Kendriya Vidhyalay in Shahibaug. Students from KG to Std V — who were forced to attend classes in the open for the past 15 days — were brought in from the cold.Central School works in two shifts. But the repair work in 12 rooms of the Old Red Building had forced students of both shifts out into the open in the middle of winter.

As the photographs reveal, the students were studying in the open air even on Tuesday morning. That is till this reporter got in touch with Principal M K Kulshresht over the phone on Tuesday morning to inquire about the situation. A few minutes later, the principal ordered all students to be brought in. “We have clubbed classes and brought the students inside. We are also conducting the repair work in a staggered manner to prevent inconvenience to students,” he said.

The staff set up benches and blackboards in its skating rink but this did little to ease the situation for the tiny tots. Not only did they have to brave the cold, they also had to endure the distractions created by students playing in the adjacent volleyball court. They were also forced to inhale the dust that arose as elder students played games.Parents of students complained that in states like Delhi, schools shut down for a while if it was harsh winter.

“Here, our kids were forced to endure the cold and study. The management kept telling us that renovation work is going on. If the repairs were so necessary, they should have carried it out during vacations, or waited till the next one. Why did they insist on doing it now, forcing our kids to undergo such torture?” asked an exasperated parent.

Another parent, seeking anonymity, said: “The children were brought in from the cold but each class is now stuffed with more than 80 students. The higher authorities should look into the matter and talk to the parents discreetly to find out what the truth is.”
