City boy Naishal Shah stood second in the all-India Chartered Accountancy (CA) exam, results of which were announced on Friday. Niket Thacker stood third in the national merit list. More than 20 students from state made it to the top-50 in the country. Of these, 11 are from Ahmedabad and about six from Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara. About 30 per cent of the students who appeared from the state are reported to have cleared Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) entrance examination.

The examination held in November last saw girls outshine boys with a Gurgaon girl topping the list. Surabhi Aggrawal from Gurgaon had topped the examination, securing 72 per cent marks. Two girls could make it to the toppers’ list this time. A total of 14,606 students, including 10,746 male and 3,860 female candidates, appeared in the test of whom 2,961 students cleared it. The total pass percentage was 20. The ICAI also conducts a Common Proficiency Test (CPT) which is the entrance level route to chartered accountancy course. About 89,253 candidates had appeared in the CPT in November of whom 34,251 cleared the test. These included 61,616 male and 27,637 female candidates.
The ICAI, a statutory body, conducts courses in chartered accountancy through distance education mode. It provides comprehensive study material in all subjects along with personal coaching facilities through its regional offices.
Time management is necessary
Naishal, a student of HL Commerce College, said he was pleasantly surprised to find his name in the toppers’ list. “I could not believe it. Though I never thought I could achieve such a high rank, I was sure to notch a high percentage,” he said.
Naishal has always been a bright student, “I have always scored distinction marks in exams that matter,” he said. Naishal, who now wants to appear in a CA exam in US, said, “Students from Gujarat are very hard-working but they lack the proper knowledge of English language. To clear these national-level examination with flying colours, I suggest that candidates allocate time properly and work hard.” Naishal’s parents wanted him to take up science stream but he opted for commerce as he wanted to be a CA.
“Parthiv Patel was my classmate in Vidyanagar and we used to play cricket together. But I was interested in CA exams more than cricket, so devoted all my time to studying instead of playing,” he said.
My family supported me
Niket Thacker, who graduated from HL Commerce College, is interested in taking up a job with a reputed firm. “Nobody in my family had expected that I would do so well. A lot of people inspired me to work hard and clear this exam. It feels good to figure in the top-10 in the country,” he said. Niket, son of a timber merchant, added that he used to study for 8-10 hours a day. Other students from Gujarat among the top-50 are Ankit Srivastava (rank 6), Bhavesh Gupta (rank 8), Rajesh Malu (rank 22), Pinkesh Jain (rank 37) and Nisha Gogri (rank 49).
HARD WORK IS THE KEY

Another city-based student Rikesh Tankariya, who ranked 41st in the all-India merit list, firmly believes in hard work and luck. “ I secured 56 per cent in class X exams but I was determined to become a chartered accountant. Only hard work pays in the end. I was a Gujarati medium student from an ordinary school, but had strong determination,” he added. Rikesh and his friend Deepak Saravgi, who secured 29th rank, wants to join a corporate house in Gujarat.
