Anguished professionals spending restless nights fearing lay-off due to the global recession can take heart from the encouraging campus recruitment trend at LD College of Engineering in Ahmedabad. Hinting sunny days ahead, nearly half of the final-year students of the institution have lapped up lucrative jobs months before passing out.Sending positive vibes amid gloomy atmosphere, 30 companies, including Wipro, ABB, TCS, L&T and National Instruments, visited the tech cradle during the first phase of placement, which continued till December 31, and hired 210 budding technocrats.

The average package of Rs 3.5 lakh per annum is healthy enough against the backdrop of meltdown. Of all the companies visiting the college, National Instruments dished out the best offer. It hired a student of electronics and communication for Rs 6 lakh per annum. The most heartening facet of the recruitment at LD College of Engineering in Ahmedabad is large number of budding mechanical engineers lapping up jobs. With 42 students of the stream booked by industries, one thing is for sure that the companies would emphasise on production in days to come. Lucrative job offers to 13 civil engineering students strengthens the notion despite the global slowdown.

Besides the budding civil and mechanical engineers, students of electronics and communication, electrical, information technology (IT), instrumentation and control as well as computer stream fared exceptionally well in the campus recruitment. While 26 electronics and communication students have been selected by the companies visiting the campus, 19 electrical engineering students pocketed job offers.

Sixteen students from computer, 18 from IT, 17 from instrumentation and control, 14 from chemical, 10 from environment, five from biotechnology and one from plastic stream have also lapped up jobs.M N Patel, the principal of the college, is delighted after the first phase of the campus recruitment. And why not? With almost 50 per cent students of his institute have been recruited by firms of repute despite the global meltdown, he has reasons enough to be happy.

“Every year around 600 students pass out from our institution. Fifty per cent of them either go abroad or turn industrialists. Thus, generally 300 students opt for jobs. With 210 students recruited in the first phase of placement, more than 50 per cent of the budding techies have secured their future months before passing out,” said Patel.

Last session, 340 students of LD College of Engineering got job offers before passing out. Fifty-nine companies had visited the campus last academic year and the average salary offered varied between Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 4.6 lakh per annum. The meltdown has barely hit the campus placements in Gujarat till now. Lucrative packages are being offered this session as well like yesteryears.
