Big honour for small techie

3-ft-tall TCS employee to get gold medal in tech cradle convocation

She hates people showering sympathy on her. Accepting challenges of life and coming out in flying colours are her basic instincts. That’s Pankit Dinesh Bindel for you, a postgraduate in information technology fighting physical hurdles with élan since childhood. Don’t judge this 23 something TCS employee by her height. She is only three feet, but is all set to bag a gold medal during the fifth convocation Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, from where she pursued MSc in IT, on January 31.

She would be honoured with the medal for securing distinction marks.The wonder girl was born on Born on May 15, 1985. Three years on, Pankit’s parents spotted retarded growth in her. After diagnosed an achondroplasia patient, she was operated upon thrice by the time she was five years old. The painful surgeries did not benefit her, though.

Pankit’s parents were initially depressed over the failure of the surgeries. The first few days were terrible. But the spark of intelligence in their small daughter reignited their hope and the mission to educate her began.“Pankit was very intelligent in her childhood and nursed the dream of becoming a software engineer,” said Dinesh Bindel, the proud father of Pankit.

The TCS techie loved playing computer games in her growing up days. Her father bought her a laptop, which served dual purposes — chiselling computer skills and entertainment. After Plus Two, Pankit pursued BCA from Gujarat University. She retained the topper’s position all the three years. With high marks in kitty, admission to Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology for pursuing MSc in IT was a matter of formalities for Pankit.

TCS, MindTree and Infosys offered Pankit jobs, but she preferred the Tata firm.This ardent lover of music swipes at the TCS office in Sakar-II at 9 am sharp.

“Mohammedbhai, her autorickshaw diver since KG days, drops her at office and brings her back home,” said Indu Bindel, the mother of Pankit, adding that she insists on doing her chores herself. With Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge still her favourite movie, this bookworm won accolades from Chief Minister Narendra Modi for her outstanding feat.
