The discotheque at St Kabir Institute of Professional Studies has light and sound systems that are seen in popular dance venues in the cityFreshers’ parties — one of the few events that students look forward to — are often a source of headache for colleges, with reports of brawls and harassment being a regular feature. However, an educational institute in the city has found a way to keep trouble-makers at bay, and ensure that students are on their best behaviour even while dancing. The St Kabir Institute of Professional Studies (SKIPS) has opened a ‘discotheque’ in the basement of its campus on Drive-in Road. It is perhaps the first institute in the country to have a discotheque on its campus. The first batch of the institute, which started functioning in August, organised a freshers’ party at the discotheque on Wednesday.
Around 60 students of the institute (inset) on Drive-in Road organised a freshers’ party at the discotheque on WednesdayThe institute, which offers a two-year diploma course in management, says the idea of building the discotheque is to ensure that students don’t resort to unruly behaviour, and have fun in a safe environment. The institute’s dean, Ravi Gor, says the discotheque is actually a music lab that doubles up as a dance floor.“This place in our campus’s basement has been constructed in such a way that it can be used as a music lab and as a discotheque,” Gor said. “Concerns over girls’ safety always arise when students organise parties at venues that are away from campus. However, if students organised a party on the campus, then parents have nothing to fear — or worry — about.”The discotheque at the institute has light and sound systems that are seen in popular dance venues in the city. Gor said that if a party is held on the campus, then students would behave properly to avoid disciplinary action. He, however, also said that parties would not be organised frequently at the institute. “We will allow students to organise parties at the discotheque only a couple of times in a year,” Gor said. One of the 60 students who held a freshers’ party on Wednesday said that she was thrilled about the discotheque-on-campus idea. “We can have fun without worrying about trouble-makers,” the student said. “My parents always object when I attend a students’ party at a private discotheque. However, they won’t mind me attending a party on the campus.” Another student said that she was surprised when her friends told her about the discotheque on the campus. “I don’t think there is any college in this city that has a dance floor,” she said.
