The security measures will also enable university officials to keep a watch on all objectionable activities on campus, including ragging, demonstrations and indecent behaviour. A few colleges in the city have already begun installing CCTVs on their campusesAll colleges affiliated to Gujarat University will soon have CCTVs monitoring movement at entrances and other places on campus for security reasons. So, while any unauthorised entry onto the campus will show up on closed-circuit TVs, pranksters too are recommended to be wary of the new development.

Vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi said all 356 colleges, with a total student strength of 2,60,000, affiliated to GU will be equipped with the facility. He said the measure was being taken to ensure safety of students in the wake of increased terrorist attacks in the country. Among other measures, colleges will have 24-hour security staff and metal detectors at entrances.

Sources said a few colleges in the city have already begun installing closed-circuit cameras on their campuses. The V-C said the measure has been made mandatory in all colleges, adding that the cost of the new equipment would have to be borne by the institutes. For this purpose, principals have been consulted, he said.

“Recent reports indicate of a threat to institutions which had not been targeted earlier. Educational institutes fall in the category. “Hence, we have decided to introduce strict surveillance and monitoring measures,” Trivedi said.As part of the security drill, students will necessarily have to carry identity cards to college, which will be checked daily.

The new measures will be enforced after the university syndicate meets to give it approval next month. Syndicate members will examine the proposals and recommend more if necessary. The security measures will enable university officials to keep a watch on all objectionable activities on campus, including ragging, demonstrations, agitations and indecent behaviour. The V-C and other senior officials will monitor from a distance student behaviour and counsel and reprimand the offenders.
