Nawal Kishore SharmaThe Hariom Ashram Trust has accused the Gujarat University (GU) of sitting on lakhs of rupees that were provided for developing an encyclopedia. A trustee of the Hariom Ashram Trust, Gautam Patel, made the allegation at a meet at the HK Hall on Thursday. The meet, organised jointly by the trust and HK Arts College, was called to discuss the philosophy and life of a spiritual leader, Pujya Sri Mota.

“Our trust gave lakhs of rupees to the university more than 30 years back to develop an encyclopedia on ‘Yantra Vidhya’,” Patel said while addressing the meet. “However, I don’t think any work has been done on the encyclopedia. The money is lying unused.”Patel said that the Hariom Ashram Trust had enquired about the encyclopedia project several times, but to no avail. “We have made so many enquiries, but the university has not responded.

We have even asked the university to return the money if it can’t develop the encyclopedia,” Patel said. Nawal Kishore Sharma, who is the governor and the chancellor of GU, said that he would seek details about funds provided by the Hariom Ashram Trust from university officials. “I will ensure that the trust gets its money back,” Sharma, who was also attending the meet, said. When AM contacted the vice-chancellor (V-C) of GU, Parimal Trivedi, he said that the trust had never approached him over the issue.

The managing trustee of Hariom Ashram Trust, Sanathabhai, said that between 1968 and 1974, the university was given Rs 55 lakh for 21 projects, including the encyclopedia one. “Of the Rs 55 lakh we have given to the GU, we don’t know the status of Rs 27 lakh,” Sanathbhai said. He also said that he had written 82 letters to the university over the issue.
