Ram dhuns and bhajans marked Sundarkand Day for collegians, who wore their uniform — the jeans — but with rudrakshThis is one day which even the Gujarat University vice-chancellor cannot object to. For when Sahjanand College decided to celebrate a day with a difference, they gave it a touch of the spiritual. Ram dhuns and bhajans marked Sundarkand Day for collegians, who wore their uniform — the jeans — but with rudraksh adorning their necks and wrists. Traditionally, it is considered auspicious to hold a recital of Sundarkand, a chapter in the Ram-Charit-Maanas penned by Goswami Tulsidas, on Saturday. So, college students were joined by faculty members on Saturday as dhols, tablas, piano, banjo and other musical instruments provided the background for ram dhuns and bhajans.TYBA Sanskrit student Dhaval Chudasama, who recited the Sundarkand while playing the tabla, said: “We wanted to do something different. We discussed the idea of Sundarkand with principal Yogesh Pandya and other faculty members. It was a great success.”“The Sundarkand is considered auspicious to read as it contains the Hanuman Chaalisa. Reading it daily brings prosperity,” he explained.Sanskrit professor Naina Desai said, “When our college decided to celebrate traditional week, we wanted to do something different. The idea of reciting the Sundarkand was mooted but we were surprised by the alacrity with which students accepted the idea. The success of this ‘day’ shows that students too have strong spiritual inclinations and are open to celebrating such days if only such proposals are put forth to them.” FYBA Sanskrit student Forum Marfatia said, “This is a great day for all of us and we really enjoyed it a lot. Such spiritual functions should be held frequently in colleges to encourage traditional values in students. This is the best celebration I have had.”Vipsa Shah, another FYBA Sanskrit student said, “Now this was a hatke celebration. The fact that such a day can be celebrated in a college was difficult to imagine but I enjoyed myself thoroughly.”
