A nine-year-old girl had a miraculous escape after she fell in the gap between the tracks and the platform when a train was leaving Ahmedabad railway station on Wednesday morning. The incident took place at 11.10 am when 65-yearold Bhagwatiben Bhavsar was trying to board Jamnagar-Surat Intercity with her granddaughter. “The train had started and was moving slowly on the tracks. We saw an elderly woman running to catch the train, holding her granddaughter Paneri’s hand.
She tried to lift the little girl, but she lost her grip and the girl slipped into the gap between the platform and the tracks. My heart skipped a beat. I thought the girl must have been run over by the train,” said a witness. “The grandmother fractured her hand when she tried to catch hold of her. She started screaming and people gathered around her. The little girl was completely trapped. We were not expecting to see her alive. It is a miracle that she escaped,” said another witness.

CHAIN PULLED
Following panic at the station, officials of Railway Protection Force (RPF) swung into action, and ASI Gopalsingh Shekhawat pulled the chain. His colleague K M Dubey, too, helped him out. However, by then, four coaches had passed by the spot where the girl had fallen. Soon, the train stopped and the girl was pulled out. To her grandmother’s relief, she was safe. Barring a slight scratch on her head, she had no injury.

TEARS OF JOY
People were so happy to see Paneri that they started clapping. Some of them were overwhelmed with emotion and could not stop crying. Later, the girl’s father reached the railway station and took her and Bhagwatiben home. RPF inspector Sanjay Chaudhary said, “This was a freak accident. I am glad that nothing unfortunate happened. It was truly a miracle that the girl survived.” Gopalsingh said, “God is kind. I was so happy to see the little girl alive and well.”
