It was survival of the fittest at L D Engineering placements this year with just 20 per cent of students finding favour with companies in the first phase. Last year, before Diwali, around 40 per cent students of L D found placements. This year, of the 1,100 students who sat for placements, a little over 200 were placed in the 18 companies that had come for campus interviews.
The brighter side is that in the history of L D’s placements, the highest pay packet of almost Rs 9 lakh was offered this year. Last year, the highest package offered was Rs 5.75 lakh per annum by Reliance Refinery. Cairn Energy Pvt Ltd, a company that has come for the first time at L D for placements, has selected two students — Neel Shah, a seventh semester student of Chemical engineering and Kunjal Shah, also a seventh semester student, of IC. The second highest package was offered by automobile major Mahindra & Mahindra with a pay package of Rs 6.75 lakh; they were closely followed by Reliance Refinery with packages ranging from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh;
Zeus Learning offered Rs 4 lakh, GSFC Rs 3.75 lakh, Linde Rs 3.6 lakh, TCS Rs 3.16 lakh and Shapoorji Pallonji Rs 3 lakh respectively to the students. Kunjal who won the highest offer said, “I wanted the petroleum sector and am happy I got it. But I did not expect such a good package. The best part is I will get to learn a lot from such a good company.” Her advice to other students is “concentrate on your communication skills and fundamental engineering. This will make a difference.” Neel said, “When I got 93 per cent in Class 12, a lot of people advised me against taking chemical engineering after getting such good percentage.
The same people after I received this package, are now saying I took the right decision. It would be a good experience working with such a company.” L D Engineering Principal M N Patel said, “The slowdown in economy has certainly affected the placements, with fewer companies coming in. We expect core companies to come for in placements after Diwali.” Placement officer Krunal Bhoyaniya said, “All companies stress on communication. So, we have been training our students in communication for the past three months. This has benefitted them.”
