The wall of CEPT University is encroaching on about 10-feet of public road
The university which has been working as a consultant for the corporation and helping it utilise public space to the maximum is now being accused of wanting some of that public space for itself. Centre for Environment Planning Technology is constructing a wall near its main gate at Dadasaheb na Pagla. However, it seems that the wall is encroaching on about 10-feet of public road. Construction on walls, on both sides of the gate, has been going on for over a month now. However, Dr Bimal Patel, president and acting director (CEPT) claims he just found out about the encroachment.“I have come to know of the wall. It is the contractor’s mistake. I told the contractor to pull down the partition on Friday morning,” he said. When contacted, Deputy Estate Officer (West Zone) H R Shah said, “If the construction is on the road, it is illegal and has to be removed. I will survey the place on Saturday and take necessary action.” Encroachment takes another form outside the institute with students parking their vehicles especially fourwheelers on the road, narrowing the stretch during busy hours. A student on condition of anonymity said, “The space allotted inside the institute can accommodate only 20-25 cars . So not just students, even faculty members are forced to park their vehicles on the road as no alternate arrangements have been made to resolve this problem.” CEPT has been working with AMC on several prestigious projects, including the bus rapid transit system (BRTS).
As a consultant on BRTS project, the institute has been involved in everything -- from designing the bus stand to fixing the route for the dedicated corridor. AMC also consults the institute before procuring buses. CEPT is also working with AMC in spreading awareness on solid waste management. CEPT is a consultant in the renovation of Bhadra fort being carried by AMC and Archaeological Survey of India.
