Haven’t found a chance to book stadium tickets for an IPL match? Fret not. Be part of the open-air crowd at Sunset Drive-In when the first match between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders is played on Friday. The match will be digitally beamed through satellite to Asia’s largest theatre screen. The only downside, if you can call it that, is that you will have no time to fetch that popcorn coz it’s an ad-free viewing.
The theatre can accommodate 665 cars at a time. More than 6,000 people can cheer for their favourite teams to be telecast live onto the 143 x 68 feet screen in HD quality. Said Navin Patel, the owner of Drive-In: “We have tied up with UFO Moviez, the world’s largest digital satellite cinema network, to show the match. We have cancelled both shows on Friday. The match will be screened from 8 pm onwards.”
Fifteen multiplexes in the city will also screen the matches. The ticket prices range from Rs 110 to Rs 250 and you can book the tickets in advance.
“We have been getting calls from people who want to book tickets in advance. However, we have rejected the idea. People will have to queue up for their tickets. After all, it just costs Rs 40,” said Patel.
He is waiting to see Amdavadis’ response to the concept. “If we draw a crowd, we will hold the screening of more matches. Even if we don’t, we will definitely screen the semi-finals and finals,” Patel added.
UFO regional manager Manan Patel said, “There are 80 multiplexes in Gujarat that will screen IPL matches. But the experience at Drive-In would be unique. High-definition telecast on the large screen along with the open air seatings will enhance the stadium-like experience for viewers. Compared to a television, there is 33 per cent more image.
“Also, there will be no advertisements after every over. There will be some advertisements before a match starts or during the strategic time-out. There will also be advertisements before the prize distribution ceremony once the match gets over. Otherwise, it is a clean feed.”
UFO is also bringing a carnival to the theatres. “We will have theatres offering cinema jockey, csheerleaders, live band, fun photo opportunity corners and freebies to mirror what happens inside stadiums."
